Mr. Webb:

How can teachers push back against union influence while connecting with like-minded educators nationwide? Are you interested in attending a paid-for teacher summit to help you fight back against the liberal teachers unions? And what is the Teacher Freedom Summit? What will it be like this year?

Mr. Webb:

Welcome to The Conservative Classroom, where we're teaching the truth and preserving our values. I'm your host, Mr. Webb, and I'm glad you're here. This podcast is a haven for conservative educators, parents and patriots like you, who believe in the importance of free speech, traditional values and education without indoctrination. Each week, we dive into issues that are plaguing our education system and keeping you up at night. In each episode, we offer common sense ideas to improve education in our classrooms and communities. You may feel like you're the last conservative educator or parent, but I want you to know that you are not alone. By the way, if you like what you hear today, please share this podcast with a like-minded educator, parent or patriot. Together, we can teach the truth and preserve our values. Preserve our values.

Mr. Webb:

In today's episode, we're speaking again with Eloise Smith about the upcoming Teacher Freedom Summit 2024. This is an episode you don't want to miss. Now let's get started. Today, I'm excited to welcome a special returning guest to The Conservative Classroom, Eloise Smith. Eloise is director of teacher engagement for the Freedom Foundation. She is a true friend of the podcast and she was the first guest to reach out to me when the podcast was new and just a few episodes old, and she's appeared on the podcast more than any other guest, I think, and I'm so glad to have you back, Eloise. I appreciate you coming on the podcast. You've been a friend of the podcast. I mean it when I say that. So thank you so much for joining us.

Eloise Smith:

Oh, thank you so much for having me back, Joey. I'm thrilled to be here.

Mr. Webb:

And for the listeners who are new to the podcast or haven't listened to the other episodes you've been on, can you tell us a bit about your role with the Freedom Foundation and how you became to be involved with the Teacher Freedom Summit?

Eloise Smith:

Yeah, my job is to advocate for teachers all across the country, specifically public school teachers, and I got into this line of work because I used to be a teacher myself in Colorado. I taught middle school and high school English, which was a lot of fun. I love the middle schoolers especially but I realized that there's not really an advocacy group for teachers out there other than the teachers union, and the teachers union doesn't stand for anything that I stand for, nor for what a lot of my colleagues stood for, so I decided to find a group that would do that, and I found the Freedom Foundation, which is really cool. They're an awesome organization that helps all public workers, not just teachers, opt out of their union, save their money and not put their money unknowingly towards things that they don't stand for, like Planned Parenthood or BLM.

Mr. Webb:

My first question after that was what is the Teacher Freedom Summit?

Eloise Smith:

Yeah, the Teacher Freedom Summit is a pretty unique opportunity for teachers all across the country. This is the second year that we're doing it the first year, joey, you were there and can maybe speak on it as well but it was really successful. What we did was we brought teachers together, first and foremost as a thank you for staying in public education. 90% of all of our students in America belong to a public school, and even in states that you know have school choice or ESAs, that number doesn't really change much. It maybe is 87% instead of 90. So the public school arena is really important.

Eloise Smith:

Public education is a vital part of the American system and we can't give up on it. We can't just cede ground and, you know, let the unions control it and teach our babies things that we don't believe in. So we wanted to thank good teachers for staying in public education and we also wanted to equip them with the tools that they need to get out of the union and to tell their colleagues on how to get out of the union and maybe even take their union completely out. We had some teachers attend last year from Miami Dade and they turned around and now have tried to completely decertify United Teachers of Dade from the district, which is 30,000 teachers, like it's a strong, huge district. So teachers come to this and they get empowered. It's pretty exciting. So teachers come to this and they get empowered. It's pretty exciting.

Mr. Webb:

I know last year I was and I talked about this on an episode that actually it was an episode specifically about the Teacher Freedom Summit it was. I put the episode out afterwards and I interviewed some teachers to ask them how they enjoyed the Teacher Freedom Summit. And I say on every episode you're not alone and that really that's what grabbed me about the Teacher Freedom Summit. The very first session you walk in a room and there are hundreds of like-minded teachers and it was so refreshing teachers and it was so refreshing. I would highly suggest, I would urge everybody that can possibly attend to attend this year.

Eloise Smith:

Yeah, I agree that was. Our goal is to let teachers know that they aren't alone. There are so many that just feel absolutely isolated and bullied by their union and told that they can't speak out, that they don't get the same representation, and all of those things are lies. There's a lot of people in every district that feel the same way that you do, and so, if you do, I encourage you to go to freedomfoundationcom, look for the Teacher Freedom Summit tab and come join us in Denver.

Mr. Webb:

Yes, and before we spoke, I googled Teacher Freedom Summit 2024 to see just how easy it would be to find it, and it was the first thing listed. Oh, amazing freedomfoundationcom slash TFS 2024,. If you want to go just directly to it or, like Eloise said, go to freedomfoundationcom and if you decide to go and you go to that website, use referral code classroom 2024. That lets them know that you heard about that through the conservative classroom. So that's a way that you can help out the conservative classroom.

Eloise Smith:

And it's also kind of a sneaky way to get to the front of the line when they apply using that code. I know that they listen to those podcasts and so they're probably a reputable person, so we just will expedite your application through Awesome. So we just will expedite your application through.

Mr. Webb:

Awesome. Another thing last year I met so many people that I eventually had on the podcast. So for the folks that have listened to the podcast, a lot of these guests that you've heard from I met at the Teacher Freedom Summit.

Eloise Smith:

So I'm telling you it's worth a trip to Denver and maybe they'll be on the podcast next.

Mr. Webb:

Oh, that would be awesome. What are the main goals of the Teacher Freedom Summit and what do you hope attendees will take away from the event? And you've mentioned the first part of that question a little bit. But what will attendees take home if they go to the summit?

Eloise Smith:

They will take home so much information it's maybe overwhelming. Most of the attendees that came last year are attending this year and a lot of them, on their applications, have said that they're coming back because it was drinking out of a fire hose. They learned so much good stuff. They now want to drill down into the minutia. So they're going to hear, um, an array of topics, all regarding education and their rights as teachers. Um, so that's the right inside and outside of the classroom. So we'll start with uh, outside of the classroom, we're going to teach you about your Janice rights and you're going to hear directly from Mark Janice, the guy whose name is on that Supreme Court case from 2018. He is going to be speaking exactly about his case and what it means.

Eloise Smith:

It's a really important topic because all it does is it reaffirmed your constitutional right. It didn't give you a new right and that's really, really important. When we're talking about your rights within the union, outside of the union and your money surrounding that, I mean, I think each teacher on average in the United States is paying $1,100 in dues money. That's so much money. At least 700 of that is going to the NEA or AFT and they're just using that for politicking. We already know that the NEA and AFT were the number one Democratic Party donors in the 2020 election. Well, it's really important that in 2024, they don't have as much power as they did in 2020.

Eloise Smith:

yeah, they do have so much power, money and power.

Mr. Webb:

That's really what they're concerned with, and I used to be a local uh president for the nea um and I can tell you at the local level there are a lot of conservative districts that the leaders at the local level are just like you and I are, and they really do care. The further up you go, the further away from that you get and the more it's about money and power.

Eloise Smith:

You're exactly right, joey, and so because of that issue, that exact issue, we're going to do an entire session on local independent unions, because we actually believe that unions can be a really powerful tool and something that's necessary, but when it goes all the way up to the national level, it just becomes this corrupt entity that's money laundering, basically. An example of that is the recent election of Brandon Johnson. The mayor of Chicago he used to be a teacher was heavily endorsed by the teachers union. There were three unions in Chicago that endorsed and gave him money for his campaign. His opponent had 750 individual donors. Brian Johnson won.

Eloise Smith:

So the unions are clearly strong. They've got a lot of influence and power in politics, and one of Brian Johnson's major campaign promises was that he was going to expand the number of teachers in Chicago public schools. Well, chicago public schools lost 50,000 students since COVID because they were so radical in shutting down the schools, and so it doesn't make sense that they would hire more teachers when there's not enough students for them to even be servicing. But beyond that, the reason that he promised that was because those teachers would then become union paying members. They would pay their union dues. The union then gets Brian Johnson elected and he gets them more dues paying members. I mean it's totally just a money laundering cycle. So we're going to see exactly where your money is being spent in a session, and then another session would be about how to decertify your union, your local union, your district level union, from being part of Pennsylvania State Education Association and the NEA. So really exciting stuff that people can walk away with concrete action items to go home and immediately implement in their school district.

Mr. Webb:

And the Freedom Summit, what sort of, I guess, tactics that the organizations like NEA and AFT use? What are some examples of the tactics that will be addressed at the summit?

Eloise Smith:

Okay, yeah, so we're going to do a number of sessions actually on union bullying, how to counter union messaging, ways to be a thorn in the side of your union, because the union is lying all of the time the side of your union because the union is lying all of the time. So I actually do a presentation around the country every couple of weeks really about lies that the union tells you, and we're going to do the same presentation at the conference more in depth, and it'll be things like if teachers resign their union membership, they're going to lose their wages, their health insurance, their pension benefits, grievance assistance, all of that. Those are all lies that the union's telling you. You cannot legally lose any of those things. The only rights that you're really going to lose by leaving the union is member benefits, so voting in a meeting or going to an election, a union election, things like that.

Eloise Smith:

They also lie about your professional liability insurance and if you really only can get it from the NEA and AFT, and even if you did get, you do get liability insurance from the national union or from your local union. What does that really mean? Well, the reality is you pay about $1,100 as a teacher in dues every year and you get less than $4 a year of insurance from them. That's how much it costs them is $3 at 76 cents. So there's a lot of tactics that the union uses to convince people to stay, and it's really bullying and underhanded, and so we're going to talk directly about that stuff.

Mr. Webb:

And, in addition to the tactics, will attendees learn about some of the radical ideologies that are being pushed by the teachers union?

Eloise Smith:

Yes, yes. So last year year, we did an entire session on woke curriculum and how teachers are able to combat it. Um, this year, I'm really excited to announce that we're going to have Dr James Lindsay um be one of our keynote speakers. If you don't know who he is, just give him a quick Google search. He is brilliant. He's a mathematician from MIT and now is fighting woke wokeism all across the board. He wrote this amazing book called the Marxification of Education, which we're going to be handing out to all of our teachers, and that's what he's going to be speaking about is how do we even get here in education? And it's really through Marxism coming into the classroom, coming into education colleges in the 60s and 70s, and now we're facing the brunt of that with CRT and sexually explicit material, and you have no identity because your identity is whatever you claim it is. All of that is directly linked to this Marxism that came into the schools, the colleges, in the 60s and 70s, so he's going to be an amazing resource.

Eloise Smith:

We're also going to do breakout sessions this year that are dedicated to more of these specific issues, issues on student discipline. I know, talking to teachers from all over the country, that's a huge issue right now. This reformative justice or whatever admin is calling it is just crap. It's not working and it's not fair to other students in the classroom. It's stealing their learning, it's stealing teachers' time. It makes no sense.

Eloise Smith:

So we're going to have a group in there talking about student discipline. We're going to be talking about First Amendment rights for students with Young America's Foundation and how conservative students can get involved fighting for this stuff in their own way as a student. And then one of the things that I'm most excited to have one of the groups that I'm most excited to have present is called the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. Ken Pope is their academic director and he does presentations all around the country talking about communism, because it's totally forgotten now and where is this ideology coming from? It's going to be obviously linked to Dr Lindsay's keynote address the night before, but his talk is going to be communist propaganda in the classroom and it's all over the country. Now, in California state standards, it has entered the classroom. So I think these resources are going to be really important for teachers and we're really excited to be offering them.

Mr. Webb:

I am so excited that James Lindsay is going to be there. I am so excited that James Lindsay is going to be there. I actually have that book in my Amazon cart right now.

Eloise Smith:

I've had it on my wish list for, like I don't know, six months or a year. Well, don't buy it. You're about to receive it.

Mr. Webb:

Okay, well, I'm glad you said that, but he's one of those people that I really want to have on the podcast and I have listened to podcasts that he's been on, watched YouTube videos, read some articles and I would tell the listeners that go to Teacher Freedom Summit. It will be worth it just to hear him speak.

Eloise Smith:

I wholeheartedly agree. Yeah, he's amazing.

Mr. Webb:

Well, speaking of speakers, can you share? I don't know if you want to give too much away, or maybe you do. Can you tell us about some of the speakers or some panels?

Eloise Smith:

Yes, absolutely yeah, yeah. So, as I already mentioned, we're going to have Mark Janus opening up the conference, talking about Janus rights and why exactly we're even able to gather and talk about leaving the union and why the union is a horrible entity for American education. And then, following that, we're going to have my colleague, my Max Nelson, speaking. Max is from the Freedom Foundation. He's been with us for like 12 years, also worked in Trump's labor department or department of labor, and he's just like a whiz on all this labor stuff. So he's going to be speaking about lies versus truth that the union tells you and really dissect all of that down. And the big thing that he's going to be hitting on is liability insurance. So, teachers, if you are confused about liability insurance, if you've heard that you need to be part of the union because of the liability insurance that they offer you, you need to come to the Teacher Freedom Summit so that you hear Max's talk on this. It's not true. You do not only have to get liability insurance through the union and in fact, you get worse liability insurance through the union than other places you could go.

Eloise Smith:

We're also really thrilled to have back Hoover Institute fellow Michael Hartney. Dr Hartney is a professor at Boston College, anda, fellow of a number of think tanks Hoover Institute, manhattan Institute, to name a couple. He is an expert on tracking down exactly where the unions are spending your money. So you're also going to receive his book. I don't know if you remember him last year, joey, but his presentation is just full of bountiful knowledge. So it's like the hard facts and figures you can go back to your colleagues with and be like actually, yeah, the NEA does spend your money on politics and I can show you exactly where.

Mr. Webb:

Yes, I approached him last year asking him if he'd come on the podcast, and he's such a nice guy he was like sure and I ended up having him on the podcast Met him at Teacher Freedom.

Mr. Webb:

Summit last year and Mark Janus had him on the podcast because I met him at the Teacher Freedom Summit last year and to me, you know Mark Janus, that's a huge name and he was so approachable. He's such a nice guy and that's the other. One of the other things that I loved about the Teacher Freedom Summit is you see these people, you hear them speak and they are just like you and I are. They're just regular folks. A lot of them are teachers or former teachers and they're so approachable. It's great to meet some of those conservative heroes.

Eloise Smith:

Yeah, and that's such a good point. A lot of our panels in the afternoon we have a lot more panels in the morning, it's more presentations are going to be filled with teachers from around the country, because you guys are the ones that are on the front line and you've lived this and you've experienced it. You know exactly what you're talking about and no one can communicate to a teacher like another teacher. We're really excited that this conference is not just for teachers, but it's truly by teachers, and so some of those teachers were at the conference last year, like I said, and they got inspired because they heard Rusty Brown another one of my colleagues who will be presenting talking about how to decertify their school district, and so they turned around and went down to Miami and they're in the midst of a huge battle right now. We actually just got on the ballot which is very exciting to replace United Teachers of Dade, which is an entity that's been there for over 40 years and consistently failing teachers. Listen to this, Joey UTD last year argued away an 8% raise for their teachers, and they also argued away teachers planning periods. How is that for teachers? Yes, it's insane. The reason is is UTD represents not just teachers but a bunch of the admin secretaries what have you? In the district there's only 30,000 teachers to the 120,000 administrators in the district. So they aren't arguing for the teachers. They're not representing teachers at the bargaining table, they're representing their other clients, the admin. So we're really excited.

Eloise Smith:

Because of these teachers that came to the conference last year we have built a new entity. We've assisted them. They built it. It wasn't the Freedom Foundation, we just kind of gave them some ideas and legal help a little bit called the Miami Dade Education Coalition. So if you go on their website and look them up, they have this amazing charter. It's going to be totally local and independent from any national or state organization just representing teachers. They cost a little less than half of what their dues are. So teachers in Miami right now are paying $1,100. They're only going to have to pay $400 with Miami-Dade Education Coalition. They are going to have zero politics in the classroom. That's in their charter. They're not allowed to be politicking, they're not allowed to give their money to politics and they're going to have term limits. So it's super cool what's come out of this conference, and I hope teachers come here and realize, like I can do this too, this is totally attainable. Mark Janis was just a health care worker, you know like anyone could do this.

Mr. Webb:

And I know last year was specifically for teachers and you guys truly pampered us, truly pampered us. Is this year for teachers only? Or if there's a few conservative-minded principals out there, can they attend?

Eloise Smith:

Great question. We primarily are. Our target audience is truly teachers or people that are working with students every day. So if you are a school counselor, if you are a secretary, if you are a educator, please do apply. And principals, if you are interested, school board members if this is something that you think needs to be happening in your district, we want you there as well. Again, we are primarily looking for teachers and counselors and paraprofessionals, but if there is an amazing principal out there or an amazing you know dean or school board member that wants to come and fight the unions with us, we encourage you to apply for sure.

Mr. Webb:

Awesome. I'm sure by now folks that already knew about it are planning on going back if they went last year, and I talked to a lot of folks that said I didn't know anything about it. I'm in a conservative teachers group on Facebook and there were a lot of folks that said, oh wow, I didn't know anything about it. So I know there's a lot of folks that are going to want to attend this year, and one thought on their mind right now might be well, this all sounds good, but what's the cost?

Eloise Smith:

Yeah, yeah, it does seem like it should cost a lot, right, we're staying at a really nice resort here in Denver. We're really trying to pamper teachers and we're so thankful that our donors here at the Freedom Foundation are to the moment you leave, which is pretty exciting. So your registration fee of $100 is just to reserve your spot and to make sure that you actually show up, and then, yeah, we're just really. We're very blessed that we have amazing donors at the Freedom Foundation that believe in investing in the future of education in America and want to support good teachers. So, again, it's a free conference. You just have to get to Denver.

Mr. Webb:

So if they can get there, the room is paid for, the meals are paid for, the conference is completely paid for. Is that correct?

Eloise Smith:

That's right, and they're going to get a lot of swag out of this as well. So free room, free board, really good meals, free drinks, all of that stuff and then some really cool swag.

Mr. Webb:

So, with the Freedom Summit covering expenses or I guess the donors of the Freedom Foundation covering expenses for attendees, how do you feel this will impact the overall experience and accessibility for the summit?

Eloise Smith:

Well, we do not want anyone not able to come just because of plane costs or whatever. So I will also mention we are giving out some travel scholarships, so if that's something that you need, just email me and we'll make sure that happens. But we're just really excited that our donors are able to do this so that we can get the right people in the room. Cost should not be a factor when it comes to fighting this stuff. I talked to a teacher recently who's in Rock Springs, wyoming, whose daughter was being transitioned while she is a teacher in the district at a neighboring school. So this stuff is happening everywhere. You can't escape it, and we want our teachers all across the country to be equipped and to be educated, and so we don't want you worrying about the cost of anything. We really truly want to spoil you. Thank you for staying in education and get you refreshed and geared up for the next school year and the next fight.

Mr. Webb:

And I speak for all the teachers, I'm sure. Thank you so much.

Eloise Smith:

Yeah, yeah. Thank you to the Freedom Foundation donors.

Mr. Webb:

Really, yeah, so generous donors really, yeah, so generous. What's the one thing you would like the listener to?

Eloise Smith:

remember. If they don't remember anything else about this episode, go to freedomfoundationcom and sign up for the Teacher Freedom Summit. You can watch a video that kind of summarizes what last year was about and you know just. Thank you for staying in education. We are so grateful that there's good teachers out there who want to raise up an informed, upright citizenry, that care about our students and that care about people being informed patriots and you know traditional American values and even just basic math, science, reading and writing. That seems to be a rarity these days. So thank you for being a teacher and for giving our students a shot, our next generation a shot.

Mr. Webb:

Is there anything else about the Teacher?

Eloise Smith:

Freedom Summit 2024 that maybe we haven't touched on, that you would like to tell us about? No, this year. I'm just really excited to see that it's growing. We're going to double our numbers. Last year we had about 200 teachers. This year we're aiming for about 400. So I'm really excited to see how this grows. And you know, I was on a call with some teachers from last year just maybe two weeks ago and just happened to put two guys on the phone with me, one from Florida and one from Oregon, and they told me that they, since they came to the conference, have become best friends.

Mr. Webb:

They text every single week.

Eloise Smith:

They didn't know each other before the conference. I mean literally opposite coasts, opposite end of the country and I think this is just like a really special way and a special place to meet like-minded teachers and potentially lifelong friends.

Mr. Webb:

I am in Kentucky and I actually met a fellow teacher from Kentucky that's just a couple hours away, that we're friends on Facebook and I had him on the podcast, had a roundtable type episode and it's just so neat that I had to go to Denver to meet a fellow Kentucky conservative teacher.

Eloise Smith:

That's awesome.

Mr. Webb:

And just to remind folks, yeah, I would say he will be there but just to remind folks uh, teacher freedom summit 2024,.

Mr. Webb:

you can Google teacher freedom summit 2024, check the show notes. I'm going to have a link to it there. Uh, freedom foundationcom slash T Summit 2024. Check the show notes. I'm going to have a link to it there. Freedomfoundationcom slash TFS 2024. Make sure you use referral code classroom 2024 so that they know you're a listener of the conservative classroom. And, like Eloise said, they can kind of bump you up to the front of the line. I noticed this year there's can kind of bump you up to the front of the line. I noticed this year there's I don't remember this being on there that maybe it was. When you go to apply or sign up, you answer a few questions and I'm guessing you're trying to weed out maybe some folks who aren't like-minded that are trying to sneak in.

Eloise Smith:

Exactly. Yeah, we've actually even already received some very funny fake applications where they just repeat the word moron 300 times or something like that. So it is. This is truly to make sure that the right people are in the room. Don't feel like you have to put an essay in. That was more of a cap so that people didn't put a full essay in that I had to read, but yeah, Well, we've given them the, the website.

Mr. Webb:

Um. Can you tell them how to connect with you or with the Freedom Summit? Um?

Eloise Smith:

or with the Freedom Foundation on social media. Yeah, yeah, you can email me directly at esmith at freedomfoundationcom. You can also follow us on Twitter. There's the Foundation Twitter account, which is like Freedom Foundation USA or something like that. Let me look real quick. And then there is the Freedom Foundation or the Teacher Freedom Summit Twitter, which is freedom for teachers, no E in teachers, and that's where you're going to see most of the updates coming, teachers announced or speakers announced and all of that stuff.

Mr. Webb:

I'll make sure and put a link to those in the show notes as well.

Eloise Smith:

Super, thank you.

Mr. Webb:

If you feel that education without indoctrination and teaching the truth is important to preserve traditional values, then support my efforts to keep The Conservative Classroom running. I'm a full-time teacher and dad and part-time podcaster. I invest a lot of hours and my own hard-earned money each week to bring you quality content, but I need your help. Check out the links in the show notes and on the website to support the podcast with one-time or recurring monthly donations. Every little bit helps.

Mr. Webb:

You can also visit our merch store to get your own clothing, coffee mugs, stickers, backpacks, book bags and more with the conservative classroom logo or one of our many other conservative slogans, such as age appropriate does not equal banning books. Defund the teachers unions. Keep politics out of the classroom and more. If you want to support common sense in education without pushing your politics, check out our products with the red schoolhouse logo on it. We know it's hard to be openly conservative in some school districts, but your silent show of support may help you find other conservatives in your community and it lets you know that you're doing the right thing. Until next time. This is, Mr. Webb, reminding you that you are not alone. See you next time on The Conservative Classroom. Teaching the truth. Preserving our values.

Eloise Smith:

It's so funny. I was telling Aaron, the CEO of the foundation, that I was on your podcast today and he was like that's the guy who sounds like he's from Adventures in Odyssey, right? And I was like yeah, actually that does sound like he totally sounds like the guy that introduces Adventures in Odyssey.
